Chania, Crete Wedding Photographer | Engagement session | Lilia+Aleksey

Four days of photoshoot, three magical locations, two islands, one flat tire and 5500 photographs…

Aleksey and Lilia are a young and very in love couple from Moscow, Russia. For them the wedding photographs were the most important part of their destination wedding in Greece. This was something that was clear from their first e-mail, since both of them are photography enthusiasts and Lilia in particular is a young and aspiring photographer herself.

Εver since they decided to exchange vows of eternal love, they set their minds on having their wedding in Greece. After our first discussion on Skype, they explained to me that they would be needing my services not just for one, but four days in two different islands: Crete and Santorini!

From the very start I understood that this was a demanding couple, that they really knew what they wanted and had big expectations from the wedding photographer on their special day. All these made me very happy, since I have never hidden the fact that I truly get satisfaction from working with couples that understand my love for what I’m doing and appreciate stylish wedding photography.

Crete is a popular destination for Russian couples, because there are direct charter flights from Moscow to Heraklion and because there is a Russian consulate at Rethymnon. This is the first post from the engagement photoshoot in Crete and Chania in particular. Another post from the couple’s pre-wedding photoshoot at Rethymnon will follow and finally the wedding photoshoot on Santorini.

With me I had Smart Productions (Kostas, Venos, Giannis), who are videographers with their base in Rethymnon and they were doing the video coverage. I would like to thank them very much not only for their help at the photoshoot, but also for their help during my stay in Crete.

At about 1 p.m. of the first day (I know it was broad daylight, but nobody could stop Aleksey and Lilia…) and after a quick coffee, I discussed with the couple the plan that I had in mind and we set out for Akrotiri, Chania. We were supposed to take photos at the unique rocks of the beach Stavros and then at the old port of Chania with the majestic lighthouse.

On the way to Chania we had a flat tyre, but this was something that didn’t curb the enthousiasm of the team. On the contrary, it proved to be a great opportunity for a photosession. Aleksey, being the gentleman he is, rolled up his sleeves to help change the flat tyre. This gave me the idea to tell Lilia to pretend that she does autostop, so this mishap created some great pictures.

On the left side of Stavros beach nature has chiseled the rocks creating unique shapes, which served as the perfect background for our photosession. In my opinion, a wedding photographer should always dedicate some time for the selection of the most suitable location for a photoshoot.

Just before the sunset, this magical time for photographers that the light becomes warmer and the shadows become softer, we ended up in the old city of Chania. What could one say about Chania? A charming city with narrow streets, coloured walls and a port that reminds of the old times. An ideal background for a photographer. Lilia’s vintage outfit and style matched perfectly this wonderful city.

For the photosession in the old city of Chania, I would also like to thank Tome, a young saxophone player, as well as a man that was fishing and lent us his bicycle.
