INTIMATE DREAMS

LAKE COMO, italy

One of the best-known villas for a luxury wedding not only in Italy but also worldwide is the impressive Villa Balbiano on the western shore of Lake Como in the municipality of Ossuccio. Built during the late 1600s by Cardinal Tolomeo Gallio and later expanded and enriched with gardens and fountains by Cardinal Durini, an art and literature lover as well as a keen collector, the villa was transformed into a true masterpiece, while being used to hold lavish parties, feasts, and balls.
Today, despite the modest façade of the actual building with simple lines and gray stone ornamental carvings, the interiors are graced with 17th-century baroque frescoes, crystal chandeliers as well as an impressive collection of antique furniture, art, and artifacts, sourced from Christie’s and Sotheby’s. Each of the 6 suites inside the villa has its own unique design and luxurious marble bathrooms. The exteriors, spanning over two hectares of land, are equally stunning with expansive gardens, an outdoor pool, a private pier, and a boathouse in the villa's premises.
This impressive property can be transformed into the ideal venue for a wedding celebration, with different areas in its expansive outdoor spaces. The Main Terrace, where ceremonies are taking place, offers remarkable views of the lake and can accommodate weddings with up to 300 guests. The Courtyard, an expansive piece of lawn right on the lake where the villa’s luxury pool is located, can be the place for large weddings with up to 500 guests. The most common way couples use is to build a marquee for an outdoor wedding reception or enjoy alfresco dining during the summer months. For a romantic intimate Villa Balbiano wedding or elopement, a great option is the Secret Garden. Lastly, for those who would prefer to enjoy the villa’s beautiful interior, there is the option for a reception with up to 70 guests or use the space for the party following dinner in the Courtyard area. The villa can be rented for 3-day events for an immersive guest experience, starting with rehearsal dinner the day before and finishing with brunch and pool party the day after the wedding. However, it can also be rented for single-day use.

The Love Story
The groom was becoming a regular fixture in the bride's family long before she was first introduced to him. Having become friends with the bride's older brother, and winning the hearts of her parents, the groom only had one more family member to meet. When that day finally came, she was introduced to him at a food-tasting event. They were seated at different tables from one other, but the groom recalls that his eyes never left the bride’s direction. After the event, the bride’s brother invited everyone to one of his favorite restaurants for oysters and champagne. The groom wasn’t going to miss his chance to sit at the bride’s table ever again. That evening, they would talk with a familiarity that only old friends seem to have and everything and everyone else faded away.
Gradually, they became more familiar with each other as the groom began to accompany the bride's brother along to more family gatherings, especially when he knew that the bride was going to be there. He took every opportunity to ask about her interests and she learned about his. Soon, they found so many common interests - one being their love for Italy. The bride had made an oath that if she were to ever get married, it had to be Italy, while the groom's love of Italy was derived from his family having a house on Lake Como.
Among their several shared interests and love of Italy, nothing made the groom and the bride happier than being surrounded by their family and friends. After the engagement, they came to the easy decision of having a Villa Balbiano wedding in Lake Como, which afforded them the unique opportunity to host their family and closest friends under one magnificent roof for a 3-day celebration of their love.
The first day started with a portrait session followed by a welcome dinner under the trees of Villa Balbiano's garden area. The wedding day was an intimate and romantic celebration, with the ceremony taking place at the villa's waterfront and the al fresco reception dinner by the pool. The bride was stunning in her Julie Vino wedding dress. On the third day, a brunch and pool party took place, which was an amazing way to wrap up this destination wedding experience for the couple and their guests. As an Italy wedding photographer, I can't wait to be back to this amazing villa for the next destination wedding. I am also looking forward to the next chance to collaborate with the team of talented vendors and creatives, whose complete list can be found at the end of the gallery images, that made this wedding happen.
