The village of Oia is the epitome of what Santorini is. Charming, picturesque and sophisticated this is where a visitor can find luxurious hotels, exquisite restaurants, art galleries as well as a wide range of shops in its narrow alleys. The typical architecture of the houses carved in the volcanic rocks, the stunning views from the edge of the caldera and the world renowned sunsets make Oia one of the most photogenic villages in Santorini, while a wedding in Oia is popular with couples that want to exchange vows in the most picture perfect location.
Elizabeth and Chris live in Los Angeles but decided to elope in Santorini and Oia in particular after a trip to Turkey. Their intimate wedding in Oia took place in Aspaki Hotel which is situated right in front of the famous three blue domes of Oia and of course has wonderful cliffside views over the Aegean Sea.
After the end of the ceremony I set off with the couple for our portrait session during the golden hour (the couple of hours just before sunset when the light is the best for photos). We had lots of time available till sunset which gave us the chance to visit several different locations around the village. Oia is like a playground for a photographer like me who loves using architectural forms in his photos and puts so much emphasis on the ideas of symmetry and balance.
I’d like to thank Elizabeth and Chris for being such a relaxed and cooperative couple. It’s because of their contribution that their photos look like a fashion shoot making hard to believe that this was a real couple and not professional models. Finally I’d like to mention Elizabeth’s words below about her wedding in Oia and her overall experience in Santorini. Words like these are the biggest motivation in my work.
“My husband and I live in California and extended a previously booked trip to Turkey to elope in Santorini 3 months prior to said trip. In terms of planning, we decided that photography was the most important aspect to us and would book a venue (everything is gorgeous and a good photographer will be able to work almost anywhere) and choose a date (only the two of us) after we secured the right photographer. I googled “Santorini wedding photographer” and 20 open tabs later, we agreed that Vangelis’s work really stood out. We contacted him, heard back in the next week (he was out of the country for work), and then booked.
Everything after is straight-forward: contract and pricing were transparent, prompt communication, and all smooth sailing (very important to me since I was practically on the other side of the world from where we were getting married).
Vangelis and his assistant were professional, punctual, and were fantastic to work with; that last part is a big deal because we booked them for 8 hours, so it was just the 4 of us roaming around beautiful Oia for a good 4-5 hours. As expected, we adore our photos. 100% credit to Vangelis, they look like they would be right in place in any glossy travel/fashion magazine, and really have a timeless quality to them. I would highly recommend Vangelis to anyone.”
